Minecraft Wilderness Bound Guide: What to Do First

Posted 1 hour ago

What is new in Minecraft Wilderness Bound? Wilderness Bound is the third game drop of 2026, released September 15, 2026 as Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.50. It adds the autumn-themed dappled forest, a new poplar wood set, abandoned camps, straw beds, cushions, and better maps. This Minecraft Wilderness Bound guide explains what's new in Minecraft 26.3 and suggests an order of things to do first in survival.

What's new in Minecraft 26.3 at a glance

Here are the biggest additions before we go deeper:

  • Dappled forest: a new autumn woodland biome full of poplar trees.
  • Poplar wood: a complete new wood type with red, orange and yellow trees.
  • New natural blocks: red shrubs and shelf mushrooms.
  • Straw beds and cushions: new ways to rest and to sit down.
  • Wool and concrete stairs and slabs: available in all 16 colours.
  • Abandoned camps: small surface structures with tents, chests and barrels.
  • Improved maps: new camp maps, new structure maps and updated map visuals.

For the full list of changes, check the official changelog, the Java Edition 26.3 page and the Wilderness Bound page on the Minecraft Wiki.

Meet the dappled forest

The dappled forest is an autumn woodland with poplar trees and the occasional spruce. Poplar leaves are red, orange or yellow, and the colour is chosen when the world is generated. The ground has orange-brown grass, coarse dirt and leaf litter, with fallen poplar trees on the forest floor.

Look for red shrubs, brown mushrooms and shelf mushrooms between the trunks. Rabbits, foxes and cold farm animal variants spawn here. The biome generates in moderately cold regions and frequently borders plains, sunflower plains, cherry groves, ice spikes and swamps.

Heads up for Bedrock players: tree density is much higher on Bedrock than on Java. That can sometimes let hostile mobs spawn in the daytime, so keep your weapon ready and your torches handy.

If you are playing single-player, or you have operator rights, you can use /locate biome minecraft:dappled_forest to find one. Otherwise, explore moderately cold regions, especially near plains, cherry groves, ice spikes and swamps.

The poplar wood set

Poplar is a full wood type. You can craft logs, stripped logs, wood, stripped wood, planks, stairs, slabs, signs, hanging signs, buttons, pressure plates, doors, fences, fence gates, trapdoors, shelves, boats and boats with chests.

Poplar saplings are obtained by breaking poplar leaves, and they grow into a red, orange or yellow poplar. The leaf blocks themselves only drop if you use shears or a Silk Touch tool, so bring one of those. Wandering traders can also sell poplar saplings, poplar logs and shelf mushrooms.

What to do first in survival

A practical order:

  1. Update and back up. Use Java 26.3 or Bedrock 26.50 (or newer) and copy your world first.
  2. Find a dappled forest. Explore moderately cold regions near plains, cherry groves and swamps, or use the locate command if you are allowed to.
  3. Gather poplar logs and a few saplings. Make shears early so you can collect leaf blocks for your base. Saplings come from broken leaves with any tool.
  4. Harvest shelf mushrooms. They grow on poplar trees and fallen poplars. Bone meal turns a small one into a large one, and a large one drops two when broken.
  5. Look for an abandoned camp. Check the chests and barrels.
  6. Grab a camp map if you find one. Common camp chests can hold maps that lead to more camps.
  7. Craft straw beds. Place 3 hay bales in a row to make 4 straw beds, a handy spare for the night.
  8. Set up a home base in the forest. Decorate with poplar planks, cushions and wool stairs.

Why shelf mushrooms are worth your time

Shelf mushrooms are bouncy. When you fall on one, it negates some of your fall damage. They also work in mushroom stew, suspicious stew and rabbit stew. Mushroom and suspicious stew now accept any two mushrooms.

How straw beds work

A straw bed lets you sleep through the night without changing your spawn point. The catch is that each bed can only be used once. It is destroyed after use, and also if you click Get up. In the Nether or the End, it is destroyed without exploding and does not drop an item. Villagers do not use straw beds.

Abandoned camps and the new maps

An abandoned camp is a small surface structure with a campsite, a wool tent, chests, barrels, and an unlit campfire nearby. Inside you can find straw beds and cushions. Rarely, a camp hides an oxidized copper chest with more valuable loot, often under other blocks.

Camps can generate in 18 Overworld biomes, including meadow, cherry grove, forest, birch forest, flower forest, windswept forest, dappled forest, taiga, snowy taiga, swamp, savanna, bamboo jungle, sparse jungle, wooded badlands and pale garden. Camps vary: you may find leaves, cobwebs, a crop farm, a tree, a pond or a stone shelter. There are 8,820 possible configurations. The Minecraft Wiki also notes that abandoned camps are one of the only structures that generate in the same locations in Java and Bedrock.

Maps got a nice upgrade too. Common camp chests can hold maps that lead to camps in eight biomes: bamboo, cherry grove, birch forest, dappled forest, flower forest, pale garden, swamp and windswept forest. The camp's secret chest loot can also hold new structure maps for a buried ancient city, a buried mineshaft, a desert pyramid and warm ocean ruins. The player icon on maps now always shows the direction you face. Also, explorer maps cannot be zoomed out with a cartography table.

Cushions, wool and concrete for builders

Cushions are decorative entities you can sit on. They come in 16 colours, stack to 16, and are crafted from 3 wool slabs of the matching colour. You can place one on any surface, but it breaks if a piston moves it or if its support is removed.

Wool stairs are crafted 4 from 6 wool, and wool slabs are crafted 6 from 3 wool. Wool stairs and slabs dampen vibrations, just like wool and carpet.

Smaller changes worth knowing

  • Spectator-mode players can now use portals to teleport.
  • Realms owners can create up to 5 invite codes.
  • Gothic has been added as a language.
  • On Linux, the game prefers Wayland natively when it is available.
  • Server owners should note that the white-list property now defaults to true.

Bedrock players also got a free official sound effects pack called Haunts and Harvest, released October 28, 2026. It is Bedrock only and is available through the party feature.

What comes next

The next drop, the Fourth Drop 2026 (Java 26.4 and Bedrock 26.70), is planned for Q4 2026 and adds ice caves. It is still upcoming, and you can read our preview in Minecraft 26.4 Ice Caves.

Wilderness Bound FAQ

What version is Wilderness Bound?

It is Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.50. Bedrock 26.51 fixed a crash, 26.52 fixed bugs related to 26.50, and 26.60 was a minor update.

Is Wilderness Bound the same as Chaos Cubed?

No. Chaos Cubed (26.2) was the previous drop. Wilderness Bound is the third drop of 2026 and comes after it.

Why do my poplar leaves not drop anything?

The leaf blocks need shears or a Silk Touch tool to be collected as items. Breaking leaves with any tool can still give you poplar saplings.

Can I use a straw bed to set my spawn?

No. Straw beds let you sleep through the night but do not change your spawn point, and each one is used up after a single sleep.
