Minecraft 26.4 Ice Caves: Everything We Know So Far

What Are the Ice Caves?

The Ice Caves biome is built mostly from Packed Ice and Calcite, which gives it a bright, frozen look compared with ordinary stone caves. You will find hanging and ground icicles, patches of snow, ice crystals, and ore tucked into pockets of stone and deepslate. One small detail worth knowing: no Glow Lichen generates here.

Cave mobs still spawn as usual, but Strays and Frostbites join them. That makes these caves a very different place to explore, so bring good gear and a plan for getting out.

New Blocks: Ice Crystal and Icicle

Ice Crystal

The Ice Crystal is a light-emitting block that behaves a lot like amethyst. It can be placed in any direction, and it breaks if the block supporting it is removed. Expect it to be a handy light source and a decorative option for builders.

Icicle

Icicles hang from ceilings and can grow up to 5 blocks long. They grow only away from light sources and outside the Nether. Falling icicles damage entities, and anything that lands on one takes extra damage. They also break near light sources, or if you try to place one in the Nether. In short, they look pretty and punish careless jumping.

Meet the Frostbite Mob

The Minecraft Frostbite mob is a zombie variant found in cold biomes. It plays differently from a regular zombie because it has two modes. At range, it throws Ice Balls. Up close, it fights in melee, and its melee hits apply the Freezing effect.

• Ice Ball: deals 4 damage, scaling down with velocity, with small knockback.
• Drops: Rotten Flesh and Ice Balls.
• Immunity: Frostbites are immune to freezing.
• Water: if a Frostbite stays underwater too long, it turns into a Zombie.
• Transformation: Zombies and Husks that end up in Powder Snow transform into Frostbites.

That last point means Frostbites are not limited to the Ice Caves, since they appear wherever the conditions are right in cold biomes.

The Minecraft Freezing Effect

The Minecraft freezing effect starts with shaking, followed by damage, and the freezing builds up gradually, much like standing in Powder Snow. Leather armor protects you from it without blocking the effect entirely. Vulnerable mobs that are affected take 5x damage, which makes Freezing a strong tool as well as a hazard.

Potions and the Arrow of Freezing

You can turn the effect to your advantage. Potions of Freezing come in regular, Splash and Lingering forms, and all of them are brewed with Ice Balls. For ranged fighters, the Arrow of Freezing is made from a Lingering Potion of Freezing plus 8 arrows. Since Frostbites drop Ice Balls, the mob supplies the main ingredient for these potions, even though Frostbites themselves are immune to freezing.

Smaller Changes in 26.4

• Snow can now be placed on Packed Ice.
• Snowballs now knock back players.
• A new Friends list adds search and sorting.
• A new Player Options screen handles friend requests, muting and reporting.
• The old Social Interactions screen is replaced by Other Players, opened from the pause menu or with the P key, and only available in worlds open to multiplayer.

Later snapshots reportedly added more, with packed ice bricks in Snapshot 5 and snow bricks in a Snapshot 6 headline, according to Beebom's 26.4 roundup.

Minecraft 26.4 Release Date: What We Know

Mojang has not announced an official Minecraft 26.4 release date. Some outlets, such as Beebom, guess around mid-December 2026, but treat that as unconfirmed. The latest full Java release is 26.3, "Wilderness Bound", which launched on September 15, 2026 and brought the Dappled Forest biome, Poplar trees, Abandoned Camps, Cushions and Straw Beds. On Bedrock, Ice Caves, Ice Crystals, Icicles and Frostbites were reportedly added as experimental features in Bedrock Preview 26.60.29 on September 30, though that source does not label the preview as 26.4, per this Minecraft guide.

How to Try the Ice Caves Early

1. Back up your worlds. Copy your save folders somewhere safe first, because snapshot worlds can be affected by experimental changes.
2. Open the Minecraft Launcher and go to the Installations tab.
3. Enable snapshots in the installation settings and create a new installation for the 26.4 snapshot.
4. Launch it and start a brand-new test world rather than opening your main one.
5. Look for cold biomes and the Ice Caves beneath them, and report bugs through official channels.

Bedrock players can look into Bedrock Preview and its experimental features instead.
